Poha or flattened rice is a traditional breakfast cereal of India. It’s tasty, easy to make quality and nutritional value has made it everyone’s favourite and frequently preferred cereal. They are enjoyed sweet or spicy across the age groups through out India. They hold prominent place in coastal India which has a predominant rice cultivating and eating community. Be it regular breakfast option; to add crunch to your fried item or add softness to a ferment product, poha has found its way. Poha has different varieties depending on the type of rice grain used and also on method of flattening. No wonder it has found its way in to our mythological stories involving shrikrishn bhagwan and his closest friend sudama.
This particular recipe is of my favourite as it has many nostalgic connections. A childhood delicacies made by mother, a holy prasadam of ancestral deity and now a quick snack fix for my family , sweet poha has all the right connections. So go ahead prepare and enjoy this dish and be a part of memory trip to my childhood. I am sure after tasting, the dish will kindle some fond memories in you too.

- Wash the red poha thoroughly and drain well.
- Add 3–4 tablespoons of water and a small pinch of salt. Mix gently and keep aside for **10 minutes**.
- Mash **½ banana** in a bowl.
- Add grated coconut and jaggery to the mashed banana. Mix everything well.
- After 10 minutes, add cardamom powder to the softened poha.
- Add the banana, coconut, and jaggery mixture to the poha and mix gently until everything is well combined.
- Serve topped with fresh banana slices.
As seen the ingredients are simple but their simple nature and freshness brings out the final taste of the dish. Freshly grated coconut will enhance the dish better than desiccated coconut as fresh carries its own sweetness. Jaggery powder can also be used. For serving you can add some dry fruits of your choice. For bananas choose as per availability but opt for sweet and ripe variety. Dash of cardamom powder and salt always enhances flavour of any sweet dish. Cardamom also helps in keeping the dish fresh and palatable. The aroma itself stir hunger and improve appetite. Since it is made up of freshly grated coconut, the dish do not have ample shelf life. It need to be consumed earliest. Storing in refrigerator may affect the flavours.
